Dog training is not really that hard. You see, your dog wants nothing but to please you. The problem is getting your dog to understand what it is that you want from him or her.
Here are a few tips that I have found to be helpful along the road as I've trained my dog:
1) Training Your Dog Should Be "Fun": Dog training is a fantastic way for you to develop a deeper connection to your beloved pet, and should not feel like a job or a hassle. There is no reason why the training can't be fun for both of you. Don't forget to have patience though!
2) Praising Your Dog: Praising your dog for positive behaviors is all well and good, but I have found that I get the best results when I include actual food treats as well. Food really excites my dog, and would probably motivate yours too.
3) Stay Away From Negative Reinforcement: Punishing your dog by hitting him or her will only teach your dog to be afraid of you. Only by focusing on the positives can you harness your dogs motivation to please you to help him or her understand how he or she is expected to behave.
4) Make Use of Body Language When Training: Dogs actually can read body language faster than they hear commands. I would suggest pairing each command with a certain movement of your hand or arm. This tip really worked for me. Remember that if you are frustrated it may show through your body language!
Training a dog is a wonderful experience, and does not need to be frustrating. I hope you will keep these tips in mind when you start training your dog. Just take it a day at a time and your best friend will catch on in no time. Good luck!
